Acorn Wizard Blocked by CNC12 Job/MDI Mode Error

I’m trying to run the Acorn Wizard to adjust the spoilboard Z-height/dig-in protection, but I keep receiving the attached fatal-error message saying CNC12 is running a job or is in MDI mode.

I canceled the job, returned CNC12 to the main screen, restarted CNC12, reran the PC Configuration Utility, power-cycled the controller, and completely reinstalled CNC12. The error still persists.

Has anyone encountered this? How do I completely clear the job/MDI state so the wizard will allow me to write the new configuration settings?

What happens when you turn everything off computer, ex controller? Ex controller has a way of remembering things..

This error occurred early this morning. I had site work to take care of, so I shut down the entire system, including the PC, EX controller, and VFD, and walked away for several hours.

When I returned, I was hoping that a complete shutdown and fresh start would clear the condition. Unfortunately, the error still occurs.

I don’t know much about the MDI mode but I do know if you were running a job you can’t do anything until the job is done or you stop it …

One additional clue: every time I restart the PC and EX controller, then home the machine, CNC12 automatically repopulates the filename of the G-code program I attempted to run earlier today.

Could CNC12 still be retaining that previous job and therefore preventing the Acorn Wizard from writing the new settings? I canceled the job and received the “Operator abort—job canceled” message, but the filename continues to return after every restart.

How do I completely unload or clear the previous job from CNC12 so it starts with no G-code program loaded?

In that screenshot the machine appears to be in a reset/estop state. Did you take it out of that state before trying to write to the wizard?

Yes, the machine was reset. I’ve tried it several times. I just used that specific screen so I could take a photo of the warning.

When you say “completely reinstalled CNC12” how did you do this?

I reran the

I reran the CNC12 installer over the existing installation. I did not uninstall CNC12 or remove the existing profile and configuration files first, so “completely reinstalled” was not the best description.

Do you mean you installed a profile from our website, or you downloaded and installed CNC12 from Centroid? if you did that latter that’s likely your issue…

We don’t have an installer for CNC12, we have a profile manager and you “add” a profile that you have downloaded from us, there’s no CNC12 installer…

To me it sounds like his original download from avid. 1.14.4.1 . At some point before the reinstall something got corrupted. Maybe he didn’t turn off the computer properly? Maybe he will come back to say?

Eric, thanks for the reply. I think I have the CNC12 issue resolved. I completely deleted Avid CNC Profile Manager and its associated files from the computer, then reinstalled everything from scratch.

This time, I used the beta version of the Avid CNC profile. That cleared the error, and the wizard is now opening normally.

As I understand it, I can also install a second profile alongside the beta profile and select whichever one I want to use when launching CNC12.

For future reference, should I start by simply deleting and reinstalling the profile rather than removing the Profile Manager and all its associated files?

I’m going to do a little more testing, but so far it appears to be fixed.

To get to the root of the issue here can you answer my earlier question about “installing over” your old profile?

Our method of having a profile manager/downloading and managing profiles does not let you “install over” an existing profile.

It sounds like you ran some kind of installer, and I want to know if you got that from Centroid. If you did that’s what caused all of this in the first place.

Eric, I’ve only used files from Avid. I didn’t know that files were available directly from Centroid, so I haven’t downloaded or installed anything from them.

When I said that I “installed over” the existing profile, I simply meant that I reran the .exe file from Avid.

Ok good, we’ve had a few people download the installer from Centroid to try and upgrade their CNC12 install that is from us, and that can really mess things up and present like what you ran into.

I’m drilling into this just so this doesn’t happen to you, or anyone else reading.

At Avid we take CNC12 and we alter it with a lot of our software tweaks. We call that a “Profile” (It’s really just a pre-setup version of CNC12)

Our Profile Manager let’s you download a profile and put it on your computer. The profile manager also let’s you load, delete, and duplicate a profile. You cannot download a new profile and use it to update an existing profile. You can only add a new profile that’s been downloaded.

So the profile manger just “manages” a profile, it doesn’t install one per-se (like a traditional Windows isntaller)

The profile manager does have an “update” function. When we provide a specific update for a profile you can download that and update the profile in place. We don’t do this too often. Those updates are NOT full profiles, they are specific patch files.

Your post was a red flag to me because you said you ran an installer to update your profile, and you CAN download the CNC12 installer from Centroid, and that would appear to work, but because of our custom tweaks to CNC12 it would actually wreck your installation, which is what I thought was happening here.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that, Eric. I understand the distinction now between the Avid Profile Manager, a full profile, and a profile-specific update.

Is it acceptable to run the current beta profile on a machine without an ATC? Everything seems to be working, but I have a continuous air-pressure fault displayed. I’m assuming that may be related to the beta profile expecting ATC equipment that my machine does not have.

Also, the original issue occurred after I moved the computer to another location to use it with a larger monitor, then moved it back to the shop. I’m wondering whether some PC settings may have changed during that process.

I generated a report through the Utilities menu, downloaded it, and submitted it to Avid Support. There may be something in that report that helps identify what caused the issue.
