Hey Eric:

That was not my issue - I stopped the program - mid-stream, moved to XY, loaded a new file (same one with an additional tool path). When it switched to the first bit it fell through (bit the dust). Note, that would be the only time I did not have a tool height check (set to always) in between programs because support suggested I always put my tool away when finished (start with tool 0). It did do a position check (X,Y, & Z) - set to always.

Does that make any sense?

I broke the holder after surfacing, then tramming, and then forgetting to reset my tool holders. Pretty sure that issue was resolved after the light went off.

Kim

Eric,

When I shut down I shut down Acorn and CNC12. When I start up I always home the machine. I never cycle power on one without the other unless it’s an Acorn Wizard adjustment and then I follow the prompts on screen.

I’m working with Avid support on the issue and did some extensive testing over the weekend and shared the results. It happens randomly and is not predictable. I can say that I ran 50 tool changes with the spindle not running without an issue. I then progressed to running the spindle while “air cutting” and started getting some seating failures. Finally I ran some surfacing routines in walnut endgrain and also had some random failures. These failures happened in my frequently used tool cradles and with a tool cradle that I haven’t used other than testing after locating the bins.

I also took temperature readings of ambient air, ambient tool holder temp, and tool holder temp right after dropping the it in the cradle for a bit change.

Cory has my data.

I have been having the same issue. After I upgraded to the new software. Bin 2 has pushed the tool out several times. I have a lower wood shelf and the tool hits it. So far no broken bits. I can re-install the toolholder and it usually works find the next time. I haven’t had time to research it but I think it may be the air switch responding slowly. It did it the first time I ran a program after the software update. Never had any issues before the update.

I have never done that. Powered on machine, homed machine, loaded program, hit start button, spindle moved to the tool changer and it push tool 2 through the fixture. I reinstalled the tool holder in the fixture and restarted the program. Tool changed was fine.

Pertech - sorry if I already asked this - does it happen with any particular length bit? I have a 2.25" bit with a 1/2" shaft on an er32 that seems to more frequent.

I didn’t think about removing the tool holder and reseating before a remeasure, but it wouldn’t hurt.

My machine has a 1/4" end mill in tool 2. Nothing special. I ran the machine today and it was fine, except the end mill broke at the collect while cutting. I guess the fall inpact cracked the tool when it fell a couple of times. Put in a new end mill and had no problems. I did record both toolchanges just in case there was a issue.
