Yes. That was a deliberate choice.
Most people have a touch plate, but not everyone. Additionally a lot of people that are doing this calibration are running a machine or a newly connected controller for the first time. It is possible that they could have forgotten to connect the touch plate.
So doing it manually makes the chances of getting it right the first time much higher.

I see!! So guy’s get that touch plate installed there’s a lot of cool things to do with it!
