I wanted to clear out all of my old invalid profiles and start fresh with a new profile and go through all the setup from start to finish to ensure that everything was absolutely correct and calibrated.

I came upon an issue when calibrating the TBOS sensor. I could make it through all steps except the final step where it confirms the system reads the sensor. It gives you 60 seconds to complete then times out. Mine kept timing out over and over every time I ran it.

I verified the cable was connected properly, as I was certain it was due to the green and amber lights working properly. I patched in a spare M12 cable I had and that was not it.

I ended up removing the end from the field wireable M12 connector that came attached to the TBOS sensor cable and found that the black wire had pulled out of the wire ferrule and was not making contact. I crimped a new ferrule onto the wire(just happened to have some along with the crimper) and seated it back in place and all worked well.

If anyone has an issue with this sensor I would recommend pulling the back cap off of that connector and inspect the wires. There is no strain relief tying the cable to the connector and those wires are very tiny 26 or 28 gauge. It wouldn’t take much to pull them out. When I put it back together I wrapped the end of the cable and the connector with electrical tape, about 1/4 of a roll, to provide some support.

@Eric , it might be worth looking into shipping these with a molded connector or provide some form of strain relief. I was shuffling some cables/hoses around a little and may have pulled it out (it worked prior to) but over time just he vibration of the machine may cause these to come out.

This is one of the reasons why we have you to the TBOS cal, we want to make sure it works, and it’s plugged unto the right port.

There actually is a strain relief on that plug, it’s the smaller plastic hex at the top. It compresses a rubber ring onto the wire to hold it tight. Was yours not tight enough?

I unscrewed the hex nut off the top and found a white cone (collet) with a black rubber inner sleeve.

As you can see from this photo, the opening is 3 times the cable size. I can’t tighten it enough to get it to grip. And of course, I pulled with wires out again.

There is some heat shrink around the end of the cable that looks like it was meant to “thicken” the cable, but it’s not working. I put it back together and tightened it well and the cable just flops in the hole.

I passed this to engineering. Good catch!
