This hot weather and Maintenance

Afternoon everyone,

With this hot weather we’ve been having, especially here in Maryland the last couple of weeks, does anyone add a extra squeeze of grease to their machine ??? I run every axis’ to get the grease moving but I have a window unit in my garage, so i don’t start anything for about 30/60 minutes once I get home (plus to cool me off)…it seems the grease settles to the lower bearings because its super hot in my garage…I don’t see it anywhere as a preventive maintenance, beside the normal quarterly addition. just checking

That stuff is VERY viscous, I wouldn’t expect it to “run”. We routinely see triple digit temps during the summer (although admittedly I don’t run the CNC when it’s that hot in my shop).

I’ve noticed something similar with the hot weather in my shop. In my experience, most high-quality greases used on CNC machines are designed to stay put, even at elevated temperatures, so they generally don’t “run” down to the lower bearings. I usually stick to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and just make sure all axes are cycled to distribute the grease evenly.

If your garage is super hot, giving the machine some time to cool before starting is a good call—not just for the grease, but for the electronics and yourself too . Some people do add a tiny extra dab in extreme heat, but I’d be cautious and avoid over-greasing; too much can attract dust and cause other issues.
