Avid CNC Pro with DMM DYN4 750W - Mach 4 - ESS – Servo settings help needed

I’m currently setting up a servo system on my Avid CNC Pro 5x10 running Mach4 on an ess smoothstepper.

Right now I have the steps set in Mach4 at 80 counts / mm equals 2040 counts / inch, and the gear number in the DMM servo drive set to 500. This gives me the correct travel distance (still needs fine tuning and proper measurement).

Does it make a difference when doubling count steps (160 counts / mm and 1000 gear number? The ess board should handle this, but my steppers where set at 80 /mm. DMM servo setup can go as high as 4096)

However, I’m having trouble tuning the PID settings on the servo. When I run auto-tune everything seems smooth, but once I apply the settings, the motor starts stuttering.

DMM provided a manual tuning guide, but I feel the tuning could be better.

At the moment:

  • Main Gain (P) is max 10, otherwise the motor starts stuttering during acceleration/deceleration.

  • If I increase Speed Gain (D) above 3, it also starts stuttering during accel/decel.

  • If I increase Integral (I) above 3, it starts stuttering as well.

  • Torque filter is set to 127, which should mean OFF.

Does anyone have similar settings they can share?
Any tips on how to tune this properly?

All help is welcome. I’m a one-man shop and currently without a working machine.
