How do I use the drill chuck sold sold directly from avidcnc properly?
I was able to spin it for a while until it was able to lock my bit in, but it seems to continously spin without any resistance.
Thanks!

To effectively tighten it you should put it in this tightening fixture:
That drill chuck adapter should have come with a small spanner wrench… I’d double check with support. I don’t personally have that one we stock, but I have a very similar one from years ago that had a spanner wrench to tighten it up. That’s what the hole in the side is for.
The wrench looks something like this:
Thanks for the reply, but doesnt look it came with
Someone mentioned on facebook that it was a tool-less chuck, and wouldnt tighten until it stops spinning in 1 direction, so not sure if youre saying otherwise.
Just found out that it doesn’t come with one. Apparently it’s different than the older (non avid) one that I have
two question:
How does the roller bearing fixture compare to the cncdepot one that holds on the flats? I have the clamp type and it sucks ![]()
Is there an advantage to having the drill chuck vs buying a complete set of collets? The set is cheaper…
They work great. I’ve had both and I much prefer this roller bearing kind.
If you want to use non standard diameters for drill bits you have that option with the drill chuck. I keep a set of “jobber” drill bits here (they’re short ones).
I often use them for clearance holes for bolts, etc.
Hmm… it was my understanding that the ER collets each have a range of diameters they can clamp, so if you have a complete set (every 1mm or 1/16”) you could cover all diameters. Is this incorrect?
(as opposed to my R8 collets, which are good for exactly one diameter each)
That’s not exactly how it works. ER collets can clamp slightly smaller than their advertised size, but it’s not very much:
These aren’t our collets, but this should give you an idea:
If that range works for the particular drill you want to use than you’ll likely be fine. Personally I like the drill chuck because you can just put whatever size you want in there for drilling.
Right! The collet option only works if you have a complete enough set that the small ranges overlap. I just figured that a collet would hold the drill bit better than a chuck, if you already had the collets, and who doesn’t want a complete set anyway? ![]()
A collet solution is also shorter than a chuck, for working with taller objects.
But I agree a drill chuck is much more convenient.
I might have to buy both dammit ![]()
