I have a couple of short 1/4" shank bits I use regularly – a keyhole cutter and 5mm drill. When properly inserted into the collet, the bit won’t reach down to my tool height sensor.
I picked up a couple 70 mm ISO30 ER32 tool holders from Portland CNC. Now the tools easily reach. Note – I have no connection to this company, just found them via google. Product seems very good.
I also picked up a 70mm ER16 to hold use when doing a final contour cut on 3d models. I recently accidentally hit a carving with the standard tool holder and, well, that didn’t turn out well:
You could also slide your spindle down lower on the drop plate too do you wanted. It looks like you wouldn’t need to lower it that far for those tools to work.
The flexibility of the ATC Spindle’s toolholder is why i bought the AV40s spindle. Looking forward to having these same options for depth and diameter, as well as quick changes back and fouth.
I’ve bought a whole bunch of their tool holders and collets. They also sell an excellent torque wrench for tightening the nut.
I always get the 40/45mm tool holders and thought “why would anybody want a longer toolholder?” Never thought of this situation!
You are going to love it. Before ISO30 and Ex controller, I found I would sacrifice doing the correct thing, e.g. using more tools, to avoid tool changes. Now the swap is so fast and simple, I use the right tool for the right job.
Whoa, I could use one of those! I frequently work around the collet diameter, and this might allow me to do more deep bowl carvings. Thanks for the tip!
I would like to see a longer (like 75-100mm) version of the ISO30 toolholder with an ER20 on it. I just bought the one with an ER16, but that can’t do 1/2".
