So I recently updated my 5x10 Pro system to the EX controller and loving the new bit height setter. The issue I have is that changing a bit above that very small surface is just asking for trouble if the bit slips out of the collet. So today using some scrap pieces of wood and plywood I made “The Bit Catcher™”:
Pro tip: When it brings your bit over the touch plate to change the bit, you can jog the machine elsewhere, change the bit and the machine will jog back over the touch plate for you.
On our upcoming ATC software update you’ll be able to specify a “manual tool change location” as well.
A manual tool change location would be great. I always jog the machine to a comfortable spot (for me), change the tool, and then run the MTC routine. Specifying that spot will be nice.
I had a similar problem with my ATC - it (or I) sometimes dropped the whole tool instead of pulling/parking it, and the floor is concrete. I ended up putting a couple layers of foam board under the whole rack to catch strays.
Of course, every flat surface becomes a table, and that “bin” is where I store spare bits and collets, and the collet wrench. On bad days, I store tools there too
