We don’t recommend game controllers.
Not only do they not work well, they’re frankly not safe. What if you drop a game controller and it’s joystick gets pegged in one direction and your machine goes flying across the table?
In Mach they did have an API of sorts that you can use to use a game controller. At best they were somewhat reliable (ask me about my drawer full of wireless keyboards and game controlers)
The safest (and best) remote to use is the pendant: CNC Control Pendant | Avid CNC
If you did you do want DIY something, a better option is to use the USB BOB:
