Horrible Spindle Sound

My spindle is making this horrible sound during warm up. Does anyone know what might be the cause?

Spindle Noise

Sounds like you could have some bad bearings. Hard to tell from the video but it looks like when the spindle stops it seems “sticky”

When powered off they should spin pretty freely if you spin them by hand.

Another test is to check the runout with a dial indicator (or just grabbing it and pulling it back and forth) if you hear/feel clunking or obvious looseness it could be time to replace it, they do wear out.

While they can be rebuilt, for spindles like this usually the rebuild price is around the cost of getting a new one.

Hi Eric, it could be from us doing a parameter reset on our Mitsubishi VFD. We were having a E.0HT error on the VFD so we do a Parameter clear. In the video we were running it at 15 Amps when it is only rated for 11. So is there anyway the team can guide us through the VFD parameters again for 4HP Spindle?

There’s a guide here:

If the spindle was already damaged and you ran it at too much power I don’t have high hopes that resetting the parameters will fix it, but it’s worth a shot.

Thanks Eric! But the guide only said how to change parameters, not what parameters were changed/fine tuned by Avid CNC. When we did Parameter Clear on the Mitsubishi D700 VFD, it resets all parameters to factory default. Is there another guide that shows what parameters were changed by Avid team for the 4HP Spindle?

We didn’t run the spindle for long (less than 1 minute) under this much power, so there is still hope!

Put in a ticket with support to get the exact list. They should be able to get it to you pretty quickly.

Have you checked to make sure the fan blade didn’t come loose on top and is rubbing the housing? Thats a common problem on that spindle. If its not that, its gotta be the bearings.

Thank you Eric! Thank you Jim! I will contact support and check out the fan blade in the morning. I will update with the findings
