New problem EX controller

All motors are hooked up and proximity sensors working but the machine will not home on a consistent basis. In some instances the dro reads that z axis is moving but it is not. Then when I finally can get it to home and try to do the touch off utility, the bit touches and goes up midway and then I get a fault. This is extremely frustrating as I thought this would be pretty plug and play

Now I have no motor movement whatsoever. If I try to jog any direction, I immediately get a drive fault. There are no lights on the back of the controller box by the motors either. Anybody else experience anything like this?

Hey @bhlwoodworks support is going to be back in on Monday. Can you give a us a little more detail about your setup? Is this a completely stock setup, are you running steppers, servos, etc.

He has the ex controller with servos, i just spent an hour on the phone with the OP and he keeps getting “drive fault 931” as soon as he tries to jog any axis after reset, even hitting the utility button automatically puts it in drive fault without even choosing any options, secondly none of the red lights on the ex box are lit up once he hits the reset. Reinstalled the profile, reconfigured cnc12, same issue. I initially thought it was something with the vfd box, but the same thing happens even when the vfd box is disconnected. Its not a cnc depot box so i couldnt be much help there, but my ex controller works perfectly fine when my vfd box is not turned on, i can jog all axis and home the machine. His wiring seems to be ok and he mentioned that earlier in the day he was able to home the machine, touch off tool and while the z axis traveled up after the touch off it halted, threw up drive fault and had the issue since.

This was an 4896 that had NEMA 34 motors and your 4hp spindle. I did the retrofit with the servos and EX controller step by step. Yesterday it wouldn’t home until late last night and then I tried to do the tool touch off utility and after it touched off it retracted halfway and gave me a drive fault. Today I come back out and turn on the machine and I can’t jog in any direction without getting a drive fault. This happens with the VFD box on or off. This is extremely frustrating and I spent an hour with @LucasPe trying anything possible and got nothing to work. I thought this would be a simple swap over and it has been anything but.

I am also getting this issue. I just finished the upgrade and followed all the instructions. I have a CNC Depot upgrade but with the original AVID box for the spindle. I am getting the drive error, but mine will not move. It makes a noise and then faults out. I upgraded to the servo from the NEMA 34. Only red light is on A AUX.

We were able to get will going by adjusting the vfd parameter and readjusting the z sensor and dampner stick out. His machine homed and motors are fully functioning at the moment.

@will70 and @bhlwoodworks have you both made sure that you have hooked up your Z axis brake?

I feel your pain bhlwoodworks, I’ve had my ex machine down for almost a month now due to having an ATC, I’m just trying to patiently wait for the proper way to get it going…

I’m not even worried about the atc at the moment. I just need the machine to move without a fault

Yes it’s installed per the instruction manual.

Your best bet is to get in contact with support so they can methodically go through your setup and troubleshoot.

Hi, my brake is connected. We figured out part of the issue: the VDF change to the 22. So, I got the Axis to move now. But I have run into a few other matters. I had the Z sensor at the distance stated in the instructions and the dampener, but the Z would not go up far enough for some reason and trigger the sensor. So, I lowered both to match where the Z stopped. I could manually jog the Z to the height to trigger it, but Homing stopped short every time. I have no idea why. Also, when homing, I am still getting the 9031 Driver Fault, Home not set error. We did get it to home once last night after the sensor change, but this morning, it’s back to the fault.

I worked on the machine all morning. Took it apart and reassembled checking everything. I noticed the break was loose so I tightened 3 small screws and I was able to jog all 3 axis without and issue but as you mentioned when I go to home the machine, z goes up but stops way short of the sensor and doesn’t trip it. The motor has 3 blinking green lights on it which, according to Teknic’s website is a torque saturation, voltage saturation, over speed, or over temp issue.

@bhlwoodworks @will70

If you haven’t already please start a support ticket and we will get this taken care of.

I sent in the request. Hoping for a speedy resolution

@bhlwoodworks and I did some troubleshooting and he had VFD issue that we resolved as well:

To explain: The motor AND VFD share the same input for faults. So if you motor OR your VFD is in a fault state you will not be able to home the machine. This is designed to protect your work should a motor, or your VFD fault while you are using the machine.

In @bhlwoodworks case he had a third party spindle so we had to bypass that fault signal. We provide a set of dip switches for folks who are running non Avid spindles to do this.

We are finishing up a document to show how to better integrate third party spindles like the CNC depot ones and will post it in the coming days.
