I’ve recently order the Avid Pro 4896 with the 4HP spindle.
I’m now researching all the related equipment, and am curious what brands/models people recommend for a dust collector for this machine. It would be nice if it was reasonably quiet. 1 micron or better filtration. Under $1500.
When I was planning out my system (Pro5x10,AV70S) I was told from Avid support that a 1-1.5hp dedicated machine would be about the minimum. Assuming that there wouldn’t be a long run to the collector. I decided to run a 40’ line (4”dia) from my machine to my 3hp collector that I use for my other tools and that seems to work well. For what it’s worth.
I have a Pro 4x8 machine with the older 3.3 HP spindle. Some years before I got the CNC I had purchased a portable 1 HP Delta dust collector for my lathe and it did a good job for that application. When I rearranged the shop, the lathe ended up on the main shop dust collector so I used the Delta for the CNC. It’s in the same room and the run is quite short. The system works pretty well - the fine stuff and most of the chips get sucked up. If I wanted it to work better I think my first change would be to buy Avid’s dust shoe or make one that was similar.
I tried several dust collars with a 3 hp grizzly dust collector without much success. Mostly unweidly and ineffective when the hose is stretched more than 4’ from the collector . Besides I like seeing what the tooL is doing. I ended up building a 4x8 plexiglass frame with a winch in the ceiling to lift it. I use a shop vac to clean up. Works very well.
I have a 220v grizzly dust collector. For sale contact me if interested.
@Eric do you have the turbo version of the Supercell? I purchased a 5hp Dust Gorilla Pro about 4 years ago (used) and like you said, it’s massive (takes up a whole section of the corner of my garage (3rd stall) but yes it’s very powerful and great for larger tools. So I purchased a used SuperCell Turbo to try out with the avid and other tools to compare the two, but with the old winter I haven’t had a chance to touch it yet. You’re the first person I know that went with the Supercell over the Dust Gorilla Pro…most folks are coming from a vacuum or HF setup. Curious also what other things factored into you going with the supercell?
I do have the turbo and it’s awesome. The dust gorilla pro was a nice setup, but it was very high volume but lower speed… So I think if you had a shaper, planer, etc hooked up to it it would be a good choice. To really get to the most out of it you need to be really thoughtful about your piping setup too.
The Super Cell is high speed and high pressure, it’s basically like a massive shop vac. This means you can just run 4" pipe everywhere and it works great.
For a smaller shop where you’re running 1-2 tools at a time the supercell is amazing.
It does a fantastic job of collecting and separating the dust. I have two entry level dust collectors that are loud and make a mess around the area, which I do not like. Although I work in an environment that makes dust, I like to keep my area as clean and safe as possible. The ease of changing the bags is another plus. There are two red knobs on the filters that are super satisfying to turn. Those knobs also keep the filters clean, but it also doubles are a fidget toy for me.
Thanks E - I look forward to getting it setup with my avid as that avid takes up most of my third stall of my garage so I sold my planer and jointer and am going to try to do most of my work on the avid..I know it will take longer, but I’ve got a bad back and I’m following the same path as Erickson Design and Woodworking…can’t wait.
I have the non-turbo version of the supercell which serves as my dust collection for my entire shop. It is on the louder side but does a great job. If I am only running my CNC did collect 100% but is I open another 4” port it still collects about 70-80% depending on what I’m cutting. I came from one of Oneida’s original 2 hp collectors and like the supercell much better for my purposes. I am a one man shop.
