Hi, I’m considering an Avid CNC I have a hobby cnc but will be selling it. Adding a 4 HP spindle really puts me over the edge, and seems overkill for a hobby machine. I’m Looking for a step by step guide to connect a vid/spindle to an avid machine. I installed a HY vfd on my current machine but would like to see the actual connection points etc for an Avid CNC. I’ve searched Youtube and have come up empty. Not certain if Avid assists in this as it is not one of their supported products.
Avid has a full set of schematics on their support site. You’ll need to configure pins1/2 for error state, pins 7/8 for fwd and 9/10 for analog speed control.
I moved my pwncnc spindle from my hobby machine to my avid ex machine. I bought a cable from them and things just worked after I disabled the spindle fault. Later I added a connector in the aux 5 hole and wired the spindle fault back up. (Bought the vfd connector wire from pwncnc and added a mx12 connector to it). I am going to wire one of the external relays to turn on the vfd at power on of the ex controller, but I haven’t got there yet. In the end I found that I was i/o limited so I added a centroid ether1616 to my system. My spindle is water cooled so I put the chiller on one of the relays and added the chiller fault. Wound up adding two additional sets of relays since you can never have enough of them.
