ATC-compatible dust collection — first physical prototype

Hey everyone, wanted to share something I’ve been working on.

I’ve built a first physical prototype of a dust collection system designed to work with ATC setups without getting in the way of tool changes. Most solutions I’ve seen fall into one of three camps: fixed dust shoes that conflict with tool changes, active pneumatic systems that add a lot of complexity, or shoes mounted directly to the spindle that move up and down with it. None of those play nicely with deep 3D carving.

This design takes a different approach; the brush sits at a fixed height independent of the spindle. That means it stays in the cut zone whether you’re doing a shallow pass or going deep into a 3D carve.

First physical prototype, so I’m still shaking out the rough edges…

I’ve been grappling with a Z-independent boot on my atc, on and off for a couple of years. I’m always keen to see how others do it.

Can you shoot some video of how it works? I’m not seeing how it functions from the pics. Keep us posted.
