AV40S Dust Shoe

I’m thinking of upgrading to the AV40S spindle and got to thinking, is there a dust shoe solution for this new spindle? I have the Avid Universal Dust Shoe and it works really well, but I don’t now if it works with the new ATC spindle and haven’t seen an alternative solution on the Avid website.

I tried to call to get some questions answered but wasn’t able to get through and I didn’t want to ponder it all weekend. I figure Eric might have some quality input as he usually does.

Thanks

I can’t speak for Avid, but when I ordered by AV70S the sales person confirmed that the avid dust shoe will work with their future ATC offering. The dust shoe will work with any of their offerings, though an adapter may be required if your current spindle has a different diameter than your future choice.

It is a great dust shoe, though IMHO the replacement dust brushes are a bit expensive.

Mine will work for it:

Thanks for the information guys. The new Avid homepage is what raised the question. The very top image shows a dust shoe hard mounted so that the spindle drops down into it like the X-Carve had. Perhaps this is for their future tool rack.

@berrianmtn, I agree that the Avid shoe and brushes aren’t cheap, but they do work well. I watched Jim’s video on cutting a window into the brushes to see what the bit is doing. I ordered the materials but haven’t got around to installing it yet. It looked like a really good idea, like most of Jim’s posts.

@corbin, thanks for the file. Though I may be the last person on earth that doesn’t yet own a 3D printer. I think I need to focus on learning Fusion more as well as study G code and CNC12 before jumping into another machine  Traveling for work doesn’t give me as much time in the shop as I’d like.

Appreciate the feedback!!

Our dust show works with all of our spindles and lots of other ones.

Eric - does it look like the Avid dust shoe will work with the ATC rotary when it is ready?

The dust shoe is already designed to work with our ATC and tool holder system.

You can use it with the rotary, you just need to watch clearance around the chuck.

I can’t confirm if any of the extra spindle to dust shoe bushings fit the AV40S because I couldn’t find any of the extras that ship with it, I only had the one that fit my Hiteco 4 hp.

However, I just installed the AV40S upgrade and it did come with a bushing for the AVID dust shoe kit that fits the AV40S. So it all works well together.

Thanks Jim, that is good to know. My AV40S is on order.

Given you had just installed one yourself, do I sense another video coming soon?

Not on the install. It was very straight forward and as usual AVID had a good upgrade manual if you need it, so it would be a pretty boring video.

When I get around to automating it I may do a video. However, that will be a while since I’m in the middle of helping to build a new church building and I’m keeping my AVID machine busy with all the altar furninture and and entry doors.
