Question on Dust Boot...which one is the best?

Which Dust boot do people like the most? I’m going to be pulling the trigger on a 4hp spindle with my new avid and the two dust boots I’m focusing on so far are the one that avid makes and the one that oneguyinashop makes. Seems like a lot of folks get the one from etsy, but I wanted to get others view on it or is there another one that people like? Just curious.

I have made and used a lot of 3d printed shoes in my day… 3d printing is super cool because you can get some really unique shapes.

They will eventually all succumb to vibration though. 3d prints just can’t handle that along with heat cycles over the long run.

I went with the Kentcnc standard split shoe long before avid’s an all these 3d printed one’s and it’s good, strong an effective. I also have a 3hp Cyclone dust collector connect to it.

I have tried both the Avid CNC dust boot and the Dust Eater from OneGuyinaShop on Etsy, and I love the Dust Eater from OneGuyinaShop (sorry Eric.) It just out performs every dust shoe I’ve ever seen - period. When I surfaced my MDF spoilboard, it got all of the dust. Every bit of it. Every other dust shoe I’ve tried (to include a few home made variations) has left at least some MDF dust on the spoilboard or floating around in the air. Not the Dust Eater. The bonus is Keith (The guy in the shop) is a good guy, and will work with you if you need something special. Simply put, it’s the best dust boot I’ve ever seen, and certainly the best I’ve ever used.

I second that. I have both and the one from OneGuyInAShop is incredible. We worked together on a custom version when I bought the laser, Keith is really a good guy.
I like the fact that the Avid one is aluminium and very steady. But the OneGuyInAShop is giving better results.

I’m still pretty new to all of this, but I bought the AVID dust shoe with my order and have no complaints. Whether I’m surfacing or 3D carving, the spoil board is literally dust free.

Remember that the dust shoe is just 1/2 of the equation. The dust collector used also has an effect on performance. I had a Powermatic PM 1300TX-CK in my shop prior to having the CNC. I am using it for the AVID now and have no issues.

I have a Oneida Dust Gorilla Pro 5hp in a small shop so that 1/2 is covered. In the past with bench top dust boots I had to open most of my blast gate otherwise the brushes from the dust boot would get sucked into the bits. So that’s another thing I’m looking at with the design, but I think both of these options cover that well.

I have the avid one connected to a dust gorilla pro. Super happy with it, outperforms other combinations I have used in the past.

I’ve got a free dust boot design that works pretty well, and designed for an ATC doing a slide (no docking). Here’s the last video about it.

I really like the split bottom design; it allows me to watch what is going on, and then pop on the second half when I’m satisfied things are working well.

I printed mine in PLA; the HITECO spindle doesn’t get too hot, and I haven’t had any problems that Eric has talked about. I did crack the clamp on one version; the second I printed with more density around the clamp to prevent that from happening. If you have a hot spindle, IE: s30c, you could print it out of PETG to avoid warping due to heat.

Mark, I enjoy all the input you offer, but I have to disagree. I have both the Avid dust collection boot and the 3D printed one from OneGuyinaShop. While both have exceptional dust collection, the one from Avid is built like a tank and feels like it will last for years. The 3D printed one hasn’t failed me, but the construction differences are significant. Although I was initially concerned about the 3D printed material, it’s held up so far. That said, the Avid boot’s durability and design are impressive, and it captures every bit of dust when I’m surfacing my spoil board.

Might as well toss another dust shoe into the mix.

I’ve moved away from the magnetic couplers that I repurposed to a cheap rockler connector that threads into a 4” hose.
