Touchplate Job Zero'ing Anomaly

Hi Everyone, hope all is well!

I’ve been using Avid EX Controller w/ClearPath servos for almost a year and it has been working extremely well for me. Thus far, there is only one concern I am experiencing and it has to do with work zero’ing with the Avid touch plate.

When I Zero a job, the operation executes normally, but the work zero doesn’t “register” in CNC12. CNC12 will retain the previous work zero.

I am using the G54 offset in CNC12 and in my gcode (keeping things simple). To resolve this, I run the zero operation one more time (sometimes twice) and the system will finally zero as it should.

This is a rare occurrence and it’s not really a big deal, however it does force me to verify the work zero on every new job.

Just looking for any possible cause for this….I hope it’s just operator error but I need some ideas/feedback to help me pinpoint what it could be.

Thanks in advance!

John

This is an odd one for sure… I’ve never heard of anything like this happening.

Can you walk me through in detail your process? Which menus are you using, what prompts are you seeing, etc.

A video would be great too.

For what it’s worth, something similar has happened to me once or twice in the past.

For me, I think it was related to the zeroing process and I think I accidentally interrupted the process.

I would set the plate, move the bit over the plate and start the zeroing process. It would descend and touch off and find Z, then move sideways to set X and then move away and set Y as normal. As usual it would raise the Z axis and start tracking to X zero and Y zero.

When it was tracking to X zero/Y zero it seems like I either bumped the magnet against the touch plate or maybe bumped the tool height setter and it seemed to throw it off.

These days I make sure to keep the magnet out of the way and stay away from the machine while it’s zeroing to make sure I don’t accidentally disturb something.

Not sure if this experience helps or not.

I upgraded to the EX Controller/Servos back in March and since then I’ve had this happen exactly once. I think I pulled the magnet off the collet while it was moving to the new XY 0 after finishing the zeroing process. Now I leave it all alone until it’s totally done and verify on the screen that I’m at XY 0.

Thanks for your feedback guys. Garth, Michael- Your experiences do indicate that I am likely not letting the zero process run to it’s full extent as I am sometimes anxious and/or impatient, haha. And with Eric’s comment that my issue is an oddball further indicates this is an isolated issue…and I am just going to conclude I need to incorporate a bit of patience into the process.

Many thanks for taking the time to read my post and give your feedback!!!

I have done the same thing and gotten the same results. I learned to be patient
