I’ve been having an issue with my 4896 pro machine intermittently locking up during a y-axis traverse when performing slabbing operations. I believe the gear is getting hung at the seam between 2 lengths of gear rack.
When I assembled the machine I used some clamps and a short length of rack to position the 2 main lengths of rack as per avidcnc build instructions. I mean, it looks pretty solid to me. Not sure why it’s jamming.
Any advice on how to address this issues?
Also an a second note. My machine is in a garage in a humid climate. I’ve been battling spots of corrosion popping up here and there on the rack and rails. Does anyone have any advice on dealing with this? Should I be worried about the electronics?
I have experienced the rack working out of position enough to cause an audible click and eventual missed steps when repeatedly crossing the joint. To the eye it looked okay, but repeating the assembly process (clamping very tightly) seems to have corrected the issue.
Thanks for the response homerSwitch.
I did exactly that yesterday, and today it survived a 7 hour routing operation with no issues so, Im cautiously considering it fixed!
I also changed the direction of travel so the majority of the milling passes were on the x axis rather than the Y.
On mine, the bolts holding the rack-teeth onto the other metal piece were slightly loose, allowing some movement. I didn’t think to check them as it came pre-assembled. Make sure they are tight!
Doing an overall frame leveling routine will help fix the cross over and the machine will run very smooth and stable. Don’t use a carpenters level. purchase a lathe level or a cnc level. you will thank me for this.
