Engagement ring box for my son

Made a presentation ring box for my son when he proposed. Inspired by work by Winston Malloy (YouTube), but I removed the ridge and went with just straight magnets.

Black walnut wood. Mother of Pearl inlay.

This looks great! I remember seeing Winston’s video on this. (more than one, over time for a 2’nd friend if I remember correctly)
Not suggesting changing a thing here, just asking from a curiosity stand point, with the magnets you’ve got, or maybe a double-stack of them. Would it be possible to have both the bottom 1/2 of the box and top 1/2 of the box made as a 2-part assembly where each has a pair of stacked magnets burried inside / permanently wood glued together before machining?
The Query in my mind is if one could get them close enough to the mating surface to not have them showing but still have enough magnetic strength to give a satisfying closure and hold securly…?
-Just thinking out loud there, in any case, nice job, this looks Great!

I did consider doing that! Would need to play around with the strength/distance and not sure if it’s affected by the type of wood?

I made a knife rack with hidden magnets. It holds the knives vertically without any trouble. Hidden magnet to hidden magnet should be easier. Experiment with two magnets on opposite sides of 1/4 inch of wood. Then just buy stronger magnets until it works. Make sure you get the polarity right during assembly.
