So if I just wanted to do laser work and not use the spindle at all. Can I make a new profile using the router option and laser and leave the VFD off…

If you are using the EX controller you will have to have the VFD on or you’ll get drive faults. I do laser only jobs and just use the out of the box Avid profile for both laser and routing. Just set your tool to tool number 99 and the laser will work standalone.
laser only is possible. You can disable the spindle fault bypass on any EX system.
Are you saying you want to remove the spindle completely?
No I don’t want to remove it completely. Just to have vfd turned off while I’m running the laser if that makes any sense. That’s why I thought maybe you could make a new profile and name it laser only 
Makes sense not to have the vfd on wasting power.
Just bypass the VFD fault and you’ll be fine. On stepper systems is a setting and on servo systems is a jumper or dip switch in the control box. You can find the location on the support site
