Machine does not move...help

Today machine was running well. since Centroid basically every day.

Usually when I go out of my shop at the end of the day always shut everything down and shut down power to the shop. every single day.

So I went out in a hurry shutdown the breakers and forgot the cnc was still on.

came back restart everything….now the machine does not move.

at first homing the z was going abnormally which has happened in the past but a restart to the system solves this.

after switching over to plasma an router now I the coordinates changing but the machine does not move…where do I need to look?

Plenty of work to do.

Tnx!

Have you tried restarting the computer and power cycling the control box and trying again?

Yes many times….installed a new profile…change from router to plasma ran pc tuner…changed ethernet cable…checked in the box for loose connections.

If this is a stepper system, which I suspect that it is given you’re not seeing a “drive fault” on the screen then it sounds like you’ve lost power to your stepper motors.

Open the control box and you’ll see TWO large power supplies side by side (they’re the two biggest components in the box…

If the E stop is NOT pressed, and the machine is NOT in a reset state and they have no power that’s your issue. If they had no power the controller would let you “jog” (numbers would change on screen) but the machine wouldn’t move. You wouldn’t get an error because the controller doesn’t know you don’t have power to the motors.

If this is the case I bet it’s a matter of a loose wire. Again, making sure that the machine is not in a reset state and the E stop isn’t pressed, if those supplies aren’t on go ahead and get in there and wiggle some wires around to see if you can find a loose connection. If you do, you’ll likely get those supplies to light right back up.

Once you’ve identified the loose connection (if that’s it) power everything down and address the loose wire, fire it back up and test.

Just be careful while you’re in there… those main power supplies are fed by line voltage (110/220) and the rest is DC 24/48 volts. It’s safe in there, but just be mindful.

Thank you1 I am going to take a look….

It seems power getting in here but not out….no emergency …if this indeed is a bad part what can I replace it with.? if I order on I ll get in 3weeks so I need a solution to get going.

Thanks!

Be absolutely certain there are no loose wires. Those rarely (if ever) fail.

I highly suspect this is solvable if you root out what is loose.

It’s that part on page 5 of this schematic: https://www.avidcnc.com/support/instructions/electronics/ex/manual/pdf/schematics/24.1/CRP5210-00-ELEC_24.1.PDF

This part is a contactor that closes the circuit to feed power to those power supplies.

Ok rechecked that relay is passing power….now the 2MW 480 both are getting power but the dc ok lights are not on…..is there an internal fuse? on those?

I still got my Mach4 power supply I think they are the same.

Tnx1

Ok some update I connected one I had from my Mach4 box and it lights up so it seems both went out at the same time….

now how do I remove the Centroid power supply?

the ones in Mach4 cabinet..there is a small lever below you can pull…breaker style.

What are you guys using for voltage protection?

I have a voltage regulator on it but I am guessing a ups might be better?

if yes which one would you recommend?

Tnx!

update

So I swapped both power supplies and the machine is back up and running

I did not run it yet but It moves and all the drives lights up once the relay is activated.

attached pics…I removed the white box because it seem to lead to nowhere and apparently is it for the brake?

Also from the SP/THC connector I am left with 2 wires orange and black should these be connected to somewhere…I do not remember I took pics but it was not visible.

Tnx!

Glad you got it working.. however I’m not convinced that those power supplies are bad… it takes some pretty extreme circumstances to kill those.

I’d pop them back in the Mach control. If they light up when you power the box then that wasn’t actually your problem.

What I suspect is that you actually had a loose wire that wasn’t closing that contactor and by replacing those power supplies you may have disturbed that wire into a place and that turned them back on…

And yes that small power supply is for the Z brake. I would put that back in in case you ever upgrade to a brake in the future.

Tnx …yes I am going to retest them later.

Good day one more problem here..

It moves good but it seems the spindle in not running at the commanded speed.

At the spindle warm up run at low speed. Ran an air test cut seems slow even though it is set at 20000rpm and spindle is set 100% in cnc12.

Nevermind 8 was missing to connect a wire…
