I’m making these barleytwist columns and it requires a tool change for a smaller tapered ball nose bit at the end, but after the tool change and after the tool has touched off it throws a z axis fault saying it’s beyond the z axis limits, so I can’t complete the file. I’ve looked at the gcode and can’t find anything different than the first tool change, which works correctly. I’ve run several other files with tool changes that work well too. The only thing I can think of that is different is that this TBN bit is a bit longer, but it doesn’t make sense to me why that would trigger the fault. Avid Pro with EX controller and tool setter. Any Ideas?
If you have “spoilboard dig in” turned on in the wizard turn it off AND set it to zero and try again
I’m pretty sure it’s off, but I’ll check it in a bit.
Make sure it’s also set at zero, not just off.
Ok thanks, I didn’t quite understand that from the first response, I’m pretty sure it’s not at zero. That must be it.
It was, in fact, already off and set at zero. I went ahead and rewrote the settings to the controller. Is there anything else that might cause that behavior?
I found someone else who had the problem when using tool #0 and I had that TBN set at tool #0 so I’ll try that as well.
I couldn’t find it in the manual, but I recall that there is something special about tool #0 (like it means NO TOOL or something like that) and you don’t want to use it for normal operation. I can’t find it in the manual, and can’t find the video that I saw that mentioned this, so maybe @Eric knows if I’m remembering right about tool #0.
You can’t use tool 0, switch it to to any tool number 1-98 and you should be good to go
Tool 0 strikes again!
Thanks! That’s what I get for just using the tool number randomly assigned by Aspire, I felt the inclination to change it, but ignored it.
