452 Ethernet Comm err. How to pick up where I left off?

Recently, I had this inexplicable error. It was a 452 ethernet communication error. Not sure why it happened.

At the time I had no choice but to restart my program, which was very small, so I only had a couple minutes of air cutting before the job resumed where it left off.

I’m sure this gets asked a lot, but I can’t find the answer. How do I get to the part of the G code and pick up where the machine left off on the tool path to continue the program? This would help save time and avoiding air cutting.

I haven’t had the time to dive into G code programming yet. By looking at it, it can’t be that difficult to learn. I have over 20 years of writing Excel “what-if” statements that were nested 7 levels deep during my engineering days and some coding as well.

I know we can perform a block at a time with G-code inputs. Would that come into play here?

Boom!

Perfect timing! I actually need to test this out later today.

I got another communication error.

I’ll have to find tech bulletin 270 to see what I need to do.

There are a couple of things you can do to try and fix comms errors:

  • Use our supplied ethernet cable. Its shielded to avoid interferance
  • Run the “stress test” that’s stored under c:\cncm\system\com_stress test to see if that passes
  • Make sure there’s no dirt or kinks in your ethernet cable
  • Switch to another ethernet adapter. This can often be the case. the USB ones on Amazon work well and are cheap: Amazon.com

Stress test PASSED

No dirt or kinks detected.

My laptop has an Ethernet port. I can try another shielded cable that I think I have. I can also fabricate my own CAT6 cable, but only if needed.

If that test passed and you keep seeing issues with our cable I’d switch to the USB ethernet dongle

I switched over to using a dongle and Ex Controller does not recognize it at all. I tried both USB ports on laptop to test. Zilch.

I’m now switching to a different shielded cable. It passed the test. I’ll see if it can withstand my next job which takes an hour to run.

When you switch ethernet ports you have to go into windows and set the original one back to “assign IP address automatically” when you do that the PC tuner will then be able to pick up the new one and let you select it.
