Which side to Z zero on? (a video!)

Hey all, I recently made this video on the differences between Z zeroing to the top of your material VS the bottom of the material:

If anyone has any thoughts/experiences please do chime in!

Hi Eric,

That’s great! I was thinking of doing this type of video too. I tell people to always use the spoilboard as z-zero. One main reason is consistency, but another reason is to just allow you to save an offset and not have to hardly ever use the touch plate. This is a huge timesaver. People doing 3d carves without a tool touch plate also need a consistent touch off point.

The only rare case where I tell people to use the top as z-zero is specifically for VCarving when you don’t want to surface the top. I think people can get better VCarve results if they surface the top of there wood to ensure it is actually flat, and if they are doing that, then referencing the spoilboard is better (IMHO).
